This is the first time since before Christmas that anybody besides Steve has posted here. My excuse: the overwhelming quality of work over at my own blog, which takes a great deal of my time.
On this day in history...
Mari Jo officially became the tallest member of the shortest half of the Baraboo Burri family.
I saw this t-shirt...
...while at a waterpark this weekend:
Does that make me a double loser?
Bonus bumper sticker sighting:
"Only a total LOSER would spend all this time trying to read what's written on somebody else's shirt."Here's the kicker: not only did I read it, I had to make several attempts to read it, because I saw the guy several times while milling around the amusement park. Since I wasn't going to stare, it took me several tries.
Does that make me a double loser?
Bonus bumper sticker sighting:
"Jesus is coming - look busy!"

Justice Ginzberg,
Could We Have a Ruling Please?
In a Reuters report on the recent battle in Najaf, Khaled Farhan uses the following description:Could We Have a Ruling Please?
"Though Sunnis and Shi'ites are engaged in an embryonic sectarian civil war in Iraq,..."
James Taranto responds:
"But wait. Everyone knows an embryo isn't a real person, just a clump of cells. This ought to clarify some people's thinking about what's going on over there: U.S. troops are over there to help Iraq exercise her right to choose. This isn't another Vietnam; it's another Roe v. Wade!" (Emphasis mine)

I'm With Hillary
Mike Glover of the Associated Press reports on a speech given by Presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton in Iowa:"The question is, we face a lot of dangers in the world and, in the gentleman's words, we face a lot of evil men and what in my background equips me to deal with evil and bad men," Clinton said. [...]
"I thought I was funny," Clinton said. "You guys keep telling me to lighten up, be funny. I get a little funny and now I'm being psychoanalyzed."
She's right; that part of the speech was hilarious. Psychoanalysis of the rest of the speech shows that she's a Kerry-esque goober, but this part was prettenear genius.
(This is the 1,400 post on Grandpa John's... if it were 1600, I'd be nervous.)
It's For Your Own Good
There is great impetus afoot here in Wisconsin to raise taxes on packs of cigarettes a dollar or more. Governor Doyle, et al., are proposing to do this as well as impose a state-wide smoking ban in all public buildings including bars and bowling alleys. Now a cynic might think that these proposals are just power and money grabs on the backs of those unfavored pariahs; that these politicians want the money for buying favors and votes. Doubtless many Conservatives and even some Republicans think cynically along these lines.
These selfish, incompassionate, hateful individuals fail to see the real wisdom, however. If they would follow the spoken logic, the obvious would finally come to light.
The reason for these proposals is public health. What higher love could they ever bestow upon us? These people deserve the respect normally reserved for saviors of all mankind.
Unselfish striving for public health... what a wonderful and worthy goal, worthy of even greater steps in attempt to perfect public health. Other socially health limiting habits and situations also need to be curbed by good-for-you-taxation to alter behavior:
The demon alcohol in all its forms,
McDonald's and other fattening chains,
Obesity; tax by the pound,
Automobile mileage,
Couch and TV time,
Abortion tax; disposing of the canceroid tissue is expensive and often turns up in cans of tuna,
Homosexual tax; treatment of AIDS is a drain on public health funds,
Race and heritage taxes; some races are prone to certain diseases as are some families,
Aging tax; the older one gets, the more medical care he needs,
Life tax; living increases medical risks,
Heart tax; much is spent on diseases of those with hearts,
Medical and psychological professional tax; to pay the costs after discovering and inventing new diseases and syndromes,
Gun, knife, stick, rock, fist, and foot taxes,
Schools and teachers tax; pregnancy is the only condition that is credited with more morning sickness,
Self-esteem tax; low self-esteem is responsible for the necessity of expensive medical services; high self-esteem makes so many others sick.
Soldier, fireman, cop tax; very high risk professions.
The proper promotion of public health can save mankind, the culture, and the planet. We should stop the political taking of halting, baby steps and boldly go where no man has gone before, with the possible exception of a few leftists in other times on other continents.

Why Do They Hate Us? Part III
Dinesh D'Souza wrote an article in the Washington Post answering personal attacks on him by critics of his newly released book, The Enemy at Home. Some excerpts:
[...]"Contrary to the common liberal view, I don't believe that the 9/11 attacks were payback for U.S. foreign policy. Bin Laden isn't upset because there are U.S. troops in Mecca, as liberals are fond of saying. (There are no U.S. troops in Mecca.) He isn't upset because Washington is allied with despotic regimes in the region. Israel aside, what other regimes are there in the Middle East? It isn't all about Israel. (Why hasn't al-Qaeda launched a single attack against Israel?) The thrust of the radical Muslim critique of America is that Islam is under attack from the global forces of atheism and immorality -- and that the United States is leading that attack."
"Contrary to President Bush's view, they don't hate us for our freedom, either. Rather, they hate us for how we use our freedom. When Planned Parenthood International opens clinics in non-Western countries and dispenses contraceptives to unmarried girls, many see it as an assault on prevailing religious and traditional values. When human rights groups use their interpretation of international law to pressure non-Western countries to overturn laws against abortion or to liberalize laws regarding homosexuality, the traditional sensibilities of many of the world's people are violated."
[...]"In other words, bin Laden believes that the United States represents the pagan depravity that Muslims have a duty to resist. The literature of radical Islam, such as the works of Egyptian writer Sayyid Qutb, resonates with these themes. One radical sheik even told a European television station a few years ago that although Europe is more decadent than America, the United States is the more vital target because it is U.S. culture -- not Swedish culture or French culture -- that is spreading throughout the world."
[...]"Contrary to the accusations of Alan Wolfe and others, I have no sympathy for bin Laden or the Islamic radicals. But I do respect the concerns of traditional Muslims, the majority in the Muslim world." (Emphases mine)
To me, it is doubtless that D'Souza makes some excellent points. But I also believe that the reasons go much deeper, but have very little to do with the urban legends that are purported by most of the talking heads.
One critic of D'Souza claims that he is siding with Jerry Falwell who stated that we were attacked due to our legitimization of abortion and homosexuality.
Although I cannot state that these attacks are a result of God's judgment, I don't have any problem with considering the possibility. God often acts in history to call people and nations to repentance. He also often uses people or nations that are even more evil than those he is warning to carry out His admonition.

True Liberals Deplore
Church/State Separation
Timothy Birdnow writes in American Thinker:Church/State Separation
"Conservatives seem baffled by the animosity held by liberals towards Christians and Jews. Christianity requires the believer submit to authority, accept the rule of government, be charitable to his fellow; in short, be a model citizen. Ditto the Jews, who held these requirements even longer than the Christians. Why are liberals so hostile to both?" [...]
"So, Christianity and Judaism, by giving the World Separation of Church and State, destroyed the old pagan order and splintered the power of the collective will. To those who believe in this collective and the exercise of the will of society over the individual, there can be no worse crime." [...]
Birdnow implies that the ACLU-esque far Left doesn't believe in church/state separation, but rather 'One nation under Washington'. In addition, "Islam can help with the dirty work of crushing the usurper ideologies of Christianity and Judaism, and then, of course, their turn will come."
That's some pretty harsh stuff, but considering the growth of Washington's and Madison's reach, Birdnow may have a point.
Tweaking Winston Churchill
“How dreadful are the curses which Progressivism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man ashydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers... live.
A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the
next of its dignity and sanctity...
Individual Progressives may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the
religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it.
No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Progressivism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread
throughout North America, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”
Oops! My bad... by some unknown glitch, 'Progressivism' has usurped the place of 'Mohammedanism' in this 1899 quote from Sir Winston Spencer Churchill (The River War, first edition, Vol. II, pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

He Doth Quote Us POTUS
Marvin Olasky quotes from a new book edited by William Federer:"We Americans are now face to face not with abstract theories but with cruel, relentless facts. There has now come a time when you and I must see the cold, inexorable necessity of saying to these inhumane, unrestrained seekers of world conquest and permanent world domination by the sword: 'You seek to throw our children and our children's children into your form of terrorism and slavery. You have now attacked our own safety. You shall go no further.'"
"There can be no appeasement with ruthlessness. There can be no reasoning with an incendiary bomb (Some say) the United States might just as well throw its influence into the scale of a dictated peace, and get the best out of it we can. They call it a 'negotiated peace.' Nonsense! Is it a negotiated peace if a gang of outlaws surrounds your community?"
"No greater thing could come to our land today than a revival of the spirit of religion. I doubt if there is any problem -- social, political, or economic -- that would not melt away before the fire of such a spiritual awakening."
"We guard ourselves against all evils -- spiritual as well as material -- which may beset us. We guard against the forces of anti-Christian aggression, which may attack us from without, and the forces of ignorance and fear which may corrupt us from within."
"We face one of the great choices of history the continuation of civilization as we know it versus the ultimate destruction of all that we have held dear -- religion against godlessness."
"As Commander-in-chief I take pleasure in commending the reading of the Bible to all who serve in the armed forces of the United States."
"No governmental organization in all history has been able to keep the human touch to the same extent as church and private effort."
The new book, The Faith of FDR, is published in honor of the anniversary of Roosevelt's birth 125 years ago, January 30th.

Made in America
Lisa Richwine reports in Reuters:"The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) told Reuters it wants Pfizer to be barred from marketing Viagra as a lifestyle or sexual enhancement drug. The nonprofit organization said Pfizer's actions had led to risky behavior by men and an increase in HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases."
Of course, a lawsuit is planned.

An Odd Parallel
Somehow I find it easy to equate this old joke:A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time of handcuffs. He immediately mailed in his $40.
With this cartoon:

If videos of airliners plunging into the twin towers and their ultimate collapse along with the ubiquitous car bombings don't inspire us to 'mail in the full $40', I'm not quite sure what will.

'Appies Sure Are Dumb,
But... They Have Good Feet!'
The above quote was made by a farrier friend of mine many years ago concerning her dealings with Appaloosa colts. It came to my remembrance while watching yesterday's AFC Championship game.But... They Have Good Feet!'
As a former basketball and volleyball coach, much of my training regimen for my players was designed to feature proper footwork and build other basic skills from there. When I watch athletes perform, I have a tendency to watch their feet.
Colts quarterback, Peyton Manning, displays footwork that would make River Dancers hang their heads in shame. His pocket choreography is something to behold. I wouldn't be surprised if he went through 3 pairs of shoes per game.
From a coach's point of view, Manning is much like Brett Favre; technically, they both do everything wrong. They both make throws with their weight centered on their back foot or with feet not set at all. I wouldn't want any kid that I was coaching to emulate their technique in any measure.
Like Appaloosas, they have good feet, but are they dumb? Perhaps not, but setting up in the pocket with several 1/6th ton missiles flying at you with bad intent doesn't strike me as Einsteinian, no matter how good of a dancer you are.

Early Celebration of
Black History Month
Frances Rice, chairman of the National Black Republican Association, writes in Human Events:Black History Month
"It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S's: slavery, secession, segregation and now socialism."
I had never thought about it before. I hadn't paid any attention to politics before the JFK/Nixon election in 1960.
It makes me wonder why America's Black population overwhelmingly supports the Democrat Party today. Perhaps it is because judging by the content of one's character rather than skin color didn't catch on the way Dr. King had hoped.

Why Do They Hate Us?
Part II
Pamela Meister's article, 'Europe's Anti-American Blinders' published in American Thinker quotes Jean Francois-Revel:Part II
"The fundamental role of anti-Americanism in Europe in general, and particularly among those on the Left, is to absolve themselves of their own moral failings and intellectual errors by heaping them onto the monster scapegoat, the United States of America. For stupidity and bloodshed to vanish from Europe, the U.S. must be identified as the singular threat to democracy (contrary to every lesson of actual history). Thus, during the Cold War, it was dogma among Europeans from Sweden to Sicily, from Athens to Paris, that the "imperialistic" power was America, even though it was the USSR that annexed Eastern Europe, made satellites out of several African countries, and invaded Afghanistan, even though it was the People's Republic of China that marched into Tibet, attacked South Korea, and subjugated three Indochinese countries. A similar dynamic applies today in the war on terror."
Revel, a Frenchman who died in 2006, also wrote in his book, Anti-Americanism, published one year after 9/11:
"Obsessed by their hatred and floundering in illogicality, these dupes forget that the United States, acting in her own self-interest, is also acting in the interest of us Europeans and in the interests of many other countries, threatened, or already subverted and ruined, by terrorism."
Denial, projection, hatred, illogicality, and stupidity... coulda happened to anybody. But if even a Frenchman could see it, it is definitely time for an intervention.
Laws for Thee, But Not for Me
Steve Stanek of The Heartland Institute writes:[...]"ACORN, a national organization of low- and moderate-income persons, has been around since the early 1970s. The organization claims about 175,000 member families in 80 cities and advocates left-wing populist approaches to a variety of issues including public housing, jobs, wages, taxes, and voter registration."
"ACORN has been calling for "living wages," which would raise wages for low-skilled workers and boost union membership by wiping out the price advantage non-union jobs have over union jobs."
"While advocating living wages, though, ACORN has opposed paying even minimum wages to its own workers."
"This was made apparent back in 1995, when ACORN sued the state of California to be exempted from paying its own workers the minimum wage. According to the December 21, 1995 ruling of the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District:
"ACORN contends that California's minimum wage laws ... are unconstitutional as applied to ACORN because they restrict ACORN's ability to engage in political advocacy. According to ACORN, this adverse impact will be manifested in two ways: first, ACORN will be forced to hire fewer workers; second, its workers, if paid the minimum wage, will be less empathetic with ACORN's low and moderate income constituency and will therefore be less effective advocates." [...]
"Despite ACORN's demands that all workers be allowed to organize, ACORN has tried to prevent its own workers from joining unions. In March 2003, after firing workers who had tried to organize, ACORN lost its final appeal of a National Labor Relations Board ruling, which found ACORN had violated the rights of its employees to unionize."
Back in my Liberal days, I considered joining this esteemed organization in the late '70's in Atlanta. But, I was already a member of PETA, so I didn't have time.
(H.T. Dissecting Leftism.)
Liberals Out Now!
It has already proven to be time for the Liberals to cut and run from the quagmire that is called Bagdadington, D.C. First of all, you cannot force a constitutional republic upon a population that is not culturally ready for it, especially using a 'living' constitution that capriciously hops about. Also, total congressional liberty is incompatible with America's long history.
American sectarian violence continues to grow, which the Liberals euphemistically term 'murder'. We can expect about 16,000 acts of deadly sectarian violence per year while the Liberals remain in power. Within Bagdadington, D.C. alone we can expect 200-300 such acts every year. By most expert accounts this should be categorized as civil war.
Deaths through car bombings will exceed 40,000, which the Liberals euphemistically term 'traffic accidents', although they do sometimes acknowledge that in many of these cases the drivers are bombed. And soon it is expected that an even increasing number of these car bombs will be foreign imports by neighbors that would profit by promoting American civil war.
Lately there have been many calls to divide the country along sectarian lines to bring lasting peace to the U.S. There should be specific homelands for Blacks, Hispanics, American Indians, Asian Indians, other Asians, and most importantly, us Curds.
"Liberals Equivocated, America Deteriorated!"

The Call of the Weird
Why do dogs love cat poop? Face it, Fido is firmly fond of feline feces. We long ago had to strategically place our litter boxes out of reach of our canine's canines. Whenever one of the kid's friends bring their dog over, before too long his snout, too, is sneaking snacks.Well, we have finally solved the problem, we have adapted, we have overcome like good Marines. We no longer buy dog food, buy more cat food, and never have to scoop the litter boxes. Everybody's happy.
Why do progressives love...? Long before their 100 hours are up, their snouts are sneaking snacks... or perhaps six course meals...
Dennis Kucinich with his new chairmanship of the Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the House Government Reform Committee proclaims that he will hold hearings on the re-instatement of the Fairness Doctrine.
This situation portends the end of Grandpa John's. It is apparent that liberals, atheists, and libertarians are not fairly allowed to post on this blog. No one on the committee cares about the libertarians, but the other two groups are very important to them and must be supported by federal government's affirmative action.
The era of Grandpa John's intolerant, racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic blogging may soon be a footnote in history. Oh, why, oh, why couldn't have we been more fair and moderate like the Daily Kos?

Why Do They Hate Us?
There has been a lot of speculation offered as to why so many Arabs and other Muslims hate the United States. Recently, the evil Bush Administration contracted my secret basement facilities to clandestinely research the question. (Under the table, of course. Potential leakers/whistleblowers were killed in a crack house shootout.)We were loaned 10 residents of Guantanamo as test subjects to experiment with some of our designer chemicals. Some of these concoctions had previously been proven efficacious on rats. I finally did find out which one had gotten in my box of Cap'n Crunch and he is now prominently displayed in the lab's pickle jar.
In all of our testing, one particular chemical showed the most promise; Baredasoulamine-HCl. Under its influence all ten test subjects were able to draw from their deepest interiors to enable us to understand why they hated America to such a vitriolic degree.
Surprisingly their hatred did not emanate from the actions of the U.S. military, from foreign policy, or any other of the usual speculations offered. The anti-American hatred was founded in the U.S. Congress, specifically by its legislative/dietary propensities.
After praising Allah, each subject would chant in Arabic, translated, "In all, there were roughly 15,000 congressional earmarks in 2005 at a total cost of $47 billion."1.
Study conclusion: These terrorists really hate pork.
Edwards: The Iraqis are Better Than Us
The discussion on January 10th Larry King Live included these excerpts from presidential candidate John Edwards:"If you think about everyday life, people are more likely to take responsibility when no one else is helping them or propping them up."
Of course... "It's time for the Iraqis to do this."
Apparently Americans are not ready for democracy and it can't be forced upon them, but the Iraqis... maybe.

The Price of Liberal Peace
Don Surber- How many people will the peace movement kill this time?"Last time out, Cindy Sheehan and her ilk led to the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. Michael Dickey put the carnage since 1975 by the North Vietnamese government and its proxies at 7.5 million people including up to 3 million in the killing fields of Cambodia."
Could Jane Fonda have been thinking, "What's a few Gooks when I have an exercise video to produce?"
From another author:
Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Hear the word of the Lord. ‘Behold, the days are coming when all that is in your house, and all that your fathers have laid up in store to this day will be carried to Babylon; nothing shall be left,’ says the Lord. ‘Some of your sons who shall issue from you, whom you will beget, will be taken away; and they will become officials in the palace of the king of Babylon.’ ”
Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the Lord which you have spoken is good.” For he thought, “Is it not so, if there will be peace and truth in my days?” (2 Kings 20:16-19, NASB)
What's a few descendants when we can have peace in our time?
Goose-Steppin' Steve
American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, by Chris Hedges, a Pulitzer Prize-winning correspondent for the New York Times who has reported from more than 50 countries over the last 20 years.
From Jon Wiener's review:
[...] "Thus, Hedges concludes, the United States today faces an internal threat analogous to that posed by the Nazis in Weimar Germany." [...]
[...] "Nevertheless, Hedges concludes that the Christian right "should no longer be tolerated," because it "would destroy the tolerance that makes an open society possible." What does he think should be done? He endorses the view that "any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law," and therefore we should treat "incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal." Thus he rejects the 1st Amendment protections for freedom of speech and religion, and court rulings that permit prosecution for speech only if there is an imminent threat to particular individuals."
"Hedges advocates passage of federal hate-crimes legislation prohibiting intolerance, but he doesn't really explain how it would work. Many countries do prohibit "hate speech." Holocaust denial, for example, is a crime in Germany, Austria and several other European countries. But does this mean that Hedges favors prosecuting Christian fundamentalists for declaring, for example, that abortion providers are murderers or that secular humanists are agents of Satan? He doesn't say."

Discovery at Crawford Dig Site
During a lull in experimentation in my secret basement laboratory, one of my researchers brought the following news item to my attention:"Cindy Sheehan made a speech at a book signing in Palo Alto, claiming that she planted her uterus under a bush in Crawford, Texas."
We immediately drove the mobile lab down to Crawford and began searching for evidence of such a deep sacrificial, cultural gesture. After several hours, we found some disturbed earth under a small Mesquite tree and carefully began our anthropological dig. To our surprise, we did find a small 'coffin' containing some biological tissue buried very, very deeply.
Returning to our basement lab we carefully examined and analyzed the tissue. It, indeed, was a human uterus. Fortunately, we were able to obtain viable DNA samples that we could compare to that of saliva samples gathered from a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker upon which Cindy had hacked a voluminous loogie. We had a match and concluded that we had indeed found Cindy Sheehan's buried uterus.
Below is our anatomical artist's rendering of our find, complete with fallopian tubes and suspensory ligaments. Of special interest was the external os dentition at the inferior cervix. Three male researchers turned white and passed out.

For some unknown reason this tissue had a Hugo Chavez sulfur scent.

John Stossel reports in Real Clear Politics:
"Mary Baker and Ruth Neikirk love to cook. What's more, they love to cook for poor people. They do it frequently, preparing meals at home and bringing them to their church in Virginia."
""I love it," Mary says. "I can take a little bit of something, like a soup bone? And I can make a whooole pot of something. Tastes good. With some cornbread you got 'em a meal!""
"The people they cook for love it too. But there's a problem. It was "criminal activity." The Fairfax County health department points out that -- horrors -- Mary and Ruth are actually preparing food and serving it to people! Without a license!"
"That's not safe, said the health department. What if there's food poisoning? Hundreds of pages of regulation say that if you want to serve food to the public, you need a food-manager certificate, a ware-washing machine (with internal baffles), drain-boards, ventilation-hood systems, a sink with at least three compartments, as well as a hand-washing sink, can openers with removable parts, and much more, for page after page."
"The county health department wasn't being capricious. It was just enforcing its rules. There had been a complaint. No one had gotten sick, but an "advocate for the homeless" noticed that church kitchens, which appeared sparkling clean to my ABC team, didn't meet "code.""
"They've never stopped me from eating out of a dumpster or a trash can," says James, an astute homeless man who understands Henry Hazlitt's "economics in one lesson," namely, look for the secondary results of government policy." [...]
"Some of them take their jobs just a little too seriously," said James. "They got nothing better to do than sit around and write legislation."
James has put his finger on another important point: the perverse incentives facing bureaucrats, who get no credit if they never meddle in our peaceful activities.
An old, near-toothless man agreed with James. "I thought they was crazy. I mean, they're [the church people] helping people, and they're trying to stop it." (emphasis mine)
I remember this same thing in Texas over 10 years ago, but that dealt with just sandwiches.

Chris Court's article in The Scotsman proves historically the real reason for Colonial America's hunger for independence.
[...] "The new regulations, being introduced this month by the television regulator Ofcom, will ban broadcasters from advertising cheese during children's TV programmes, or shows with a large number of child viewers."
"They are part of a government clampdown on junk- food TV adverts and aimed at reducing the exposure of children to food high in fat, salt and sugar."
"The ban comes in the wake of evidence that television commercials have an indirect influence on what children eat and are contributing to obesity in the young."
"The Food Standards Agency used a nutrient profiling model to distinguish junk food from healthy food."
"The model officially labelled cheese as more unhealthy than sugary cereals, full-fat crisps and cheeseburgers." [...]
