Okay, taking on Ed Garvey's latest idea in today's column.
One idea I started to explore, but didn't, was this: by allying themselves with ultra-leftist groups, are Libertarian leaders like Ed Thompson and Michael Badnarik doing well by their party, or not?
On the one hand, they're gaining some valuable media time, and taking a shot at the established political powers.
On the other, they're standing next to people whose belief system makes them entirely unpalatable to the average conservative, and I believe Libertarians do tend to fall into the conservative part of the spectrum.
Any thoughts?

I suppose it depends on which flavor of libertarian and leftist you are speaking of. I tend to think that liberals have much in common with classical libertarians. Interesting definitions of libertarian and and leftism.
Right now I think that the lefties and libertarians could ally on quite a few issues. I don't think either particularly like the Patriot Act, or giving corporations similar status as "people". I'm not really going too far out on the limb in saying that the left in the U.S. is more in tune with fiscal conservatism then the so-called conservatives, as the war in Iraq, social security reform, the medicare drug benefit demonstrate.
