Memorial Day is the perfect occasion to embrace the truth. Do not listen to those who say that it is just another day off where people do nothing but drink beer and eat barbecue with their buddies. That’s a strawman offered up by the bumper sticker set because they fear Memorial Day’s true meaning.I also think that George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wouldn't want to be honored by taking the day off from school or work. They would be more honored by people working or studying a little harder on that day.
At the risk of being presumptuous, those who gave their lives for our country would want you to gather your buddies and drink beers and eat barbecue... There is a reason that on Memorial Day the flag flies at half-staff only until noon, when it is raised to the top of the pole again. It symbolizes that we honor our dead by going forward with our lives.
“We make men without chests and we expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and we are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful."- C.S. Lewis in The Abolition of Man
